SBP officers hold foreign passports


Many officers of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) have acquired citizenship of the US and other countries.


Sources said SBP governor Yasin Anwar has acquired citizenship of the US whereas according to Nationalised Banking Act 1974, a dual national cannot be head of a government bank. However, this act is applicable on other employees.

They said that SBP Executive Director (Operations) Inayat Hussain had got a three-year visa for Australia. Similarly, SBP Director Banking Supervision Syed Irfan Ali has also got a three-year visa of the UK.

The sources said that the SBP Director Research Ali Chaudhry is a British national while Director Monitoring Policy Dr Hamza Ali Malik is a Canadian national. Former MD of SBP sub department Banking Services, Aftab Mustafa Khan, was also a Canadian national while SBP deputy Governor Ashraf Wathra had spent 15 years in Singapore. He who spends five years in Singapore is entitled to get that country’s passport.
